Hey Ian,

I've read the Harmony-Central reviews for the Jupiter Tone caps (FWIW) and everyone there is gushing. At this point in time these caps are the leaders by a head (maybe a neck). I'll investigate further and let you know how things shake down. Thanks a heap!

Sounds like this is going to be one cool amp when you're done! I've definitely spent some time since I wrote the articles listening to a lot of caps in guitar amps. There's obviously a lot more to the sound of an amp than the caps, however, you can tell the difference by swapping out caps, no questions asked. I came to love the MojoTone.com Dijon caps for Fender amps, especially the newer ones. They tend to flatten out the extreme high end (ice-pickiness at times) of these amps. I still love the Jupiter Tone caps that I wrote about earlier - I think that they are the best, but they're more expensive. If money is not a concern (seems it's not!), I'd go with these.

The Orange drops sound "newer" and work very well with amps like a Krank or Mesa with multiple preamp gain stages. I don't use the Mallorys anymore, but they're fine too. I'd have to say that the Mojo Dijon ones sound better than the Mallorys, and the construction appears to be better as well.

Send a picture when you're done with it and I'll post it here with your comments!

Also, I forgot to add that you should try out the JJ preamp tubes with the Super Sonic, but be forewarned - they're higher gain than the Sovteks that came with it and the circuit is built for those Sovteks. With the best of intentions, I couldn't even get vintage RCA 12ax7s to sound completely right in that circuit. So, definitely try out new tubes and experiement, but don't be surprised if you hear noises, crackles, and other unwanted things once you replace them. The solution is to go back to the "boring" old Sovteks. They actually sound quite good in that amp!

I am having my Super-Sonic modded and as of this writing the tech will be using Orange Drops (not exactly sure in which positions). I had spoken to another tech who swore by Mallory 150s but had never done a Super-Sonic (neither has the tech performing this mod). I would be extremely interested in what you ended up using and why. Other changes to be implemented include: Mercury Magnetics power and output transformers; MMs choke; and swapping the #1 position 12AX7(possibly with a T-12AX7-GOLD-JJ or a T-12AX7-S-JJ. As soon as the transformers come in he will begin the mods--making time of the essence. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Mick!

I don't know too much about that transformer, but here's some info that will lead you to the answer:

Schematic for the Bassman 135:
http://www.ampwares.com/amp.asp?id=29

Hi Mike,

I'm not familiar with that particular circuit, but unless there's a possible short, or the harness is visibly deteriorated, it may be better to stick with the original. Or not, but here's why: At least on the Fender stuff, the build quality was excellent back then. There's always the argument about safety vs. originality and one common case is whether to replace the original two prong power cord on a Fender Blackface amp with a three prong. My feelings have always been that if the amp is going to sit in a display case, keep things original. If you're going to use it, replace the cord. I've been shocked too many times by badly grounded equipment, so when safety is an issue (and safety is always an issue, if the amp is to be used!), I always opt to make sure that things are wired and grounded properly. Thanks!
